Lighting and Solar PV make the most impact for reducing school emissions
Catapault, in collaboration with the Department for Energy and Net Zero and Government Property Function, has released a Climate Action Plan for Schools aimed at decarbonising. The plan aligns with the current DfE strategy for all schools to have a climate action plan by 2025, with a target to reduce emissions by 75% by 2037.
According to the guide, implementing LED lighting and controls along with Solar PV systems have been highlighted as the most impactful measures for schools. This initiative can lead to significant savings of £10,000 annually, which represents a 33% reduction on a typical school's energy bill of £30,000. Additionally, these upgrades offer the best return on investment and are comparatively easier and less intrusive to install compared to other measures.
